Get a notification at the start time, minutes to weeks before, or at a set time on the day. Set default reminders and see when and how they arrive.
A reminder is a notification Heym shows you at a moment you choose: when a task or habit starts, some time before it, or at a set time on its day. This page covers adding reminders, the warning you see when one can’t go off, default reminders, and how they reach you.
Click Empty next to Reminders (if the task already has reminders, click next to them). A menu offers At start, 5 minutes before, 10 minutes before, 30 minutes before and 1 hour before.

Pick one, or type your own
Click a choice, or type something like 2h or 2pm and press Enter. The menu shows what your text means before you add it.
Typing a number offers it in minutes, hours, days and weeks
The menu stays open, so you can add another reminder right away. To remove one, click the × on it, or press Backspace while nothing is typed to remove the last one.You can also add reminders in other places:
Choose 2 minutes before, 2 hours before, 2 days before or 2 weeks before
A number with a unit: 90m, 2h, 3d, 1w, or 45 minutes, 2 hours
That long before the start time
A time: 2pm, 9:30 am, 14:00
On the day at that time

At start
A reminder can be up to 4 weeks before. A time without am or pm counts as 24-hour time, so 2:30 means 2:30 in the morning; type 2:30 pm for the afternoon. Each task or habit can have up to 10 reminders. Once it has 10, the menu says 10 reminders max.
At start and every “before” reminder count back from the task’s start time. A task with a date but no start time (an all-day task) can only use On the day at a time. The menu doesn’t list that choice: type a time such as 9am to get On the day at 9:00 AM. A task without a date can’t remind you at all yet.Heym still saves a reminder that can’t go off yet, and marks it with a warning triangle. Point at the triangle to see what’s missing:
An all-day task with a reminder that counts back from a start time

What to do
Set a start time to receive this reminder
Give the task a start time, or type a time such as 9am in the Reminders menu to get On the day at 9:00 AM instead.
Set a date to receive this reminder
Give the task a date.
Set a date and start time to receive this reminder
Add both.
Use an offset of less than a day to receive this reminder
On a habit with a weekly, monthly or yearly target, choose a reminder less than a day before.
The warning goes away, and the reminder starts working, as soon as the task has what it needs.
Heym can add a reminder for you, so you don’t have to set one on every task. Click your name at the top of the sidebar, then Settings → Notifications.

On the day at 9:00 AM
A task gets the timed default when it gets a start time, and the all-day default when it gets a date without one, but only if it has no reminders at that moment. So an all-day task that already has the all-day default keeps it when you give it a time (habits work differently, see below). Delete a default and it doesn’t come back, unless the task loses its date or time and then gets it again.Changing a default doesn’t touch tasks that already have their reminders.
Open a habit and click Reminders. It’s the same menu as for tasks. “Before” reminders count back from the habit’s time, which you set under Schedule. A habit without a time can use On the day at a time.A habit reminds you on every day it’s scheduled, until you’ve done it that day. Days you mark as skipped or failed stay quiet too. A habit with a weekly, monthly or yearly target, such as 3 times a week, reminds you every day until you reach the target, and only takes reminders less than a day before.Archived habits don’t remind you, and neither do habits that are read-only because they’re over your Free plan limit (see Free, Pro and Lifetime).A new habit without a time gets your all-day default. The first time you give it a time, Heym swaps that default for your timed default, unless you changed the habit’s reminders in the meantime. More on habits in Habits.
Reminders appear as notifications from your browser while Heym is open in a tab. The tab can be in the background. The first time you add a reminder, your browser asks whether Heym may show notifications: choose Allow. If you only use default reminders and never added one yourself, your browser hasn’t asked yet. In Settings → Notifications, turn Task reminder notifications off and on again, then choose Allow.
Reminders appear as notifications from Heym while a Heym window is open, even in the background. Closing the window keeps Heym running in the Dock, but no reminders appear until you open a window again. A reminder that came due in the last 10 minutes still shows when you do. Older ones are skipped.
A notification shows the task’s name and when it starts, such as Starts at 6:00 PM, or Due today for an all-day task. A reminder days ahead names the day. Click the notification to open the task or habit.
Heym was closed at that moment: if you open it within 10 minutes, the reminder still appears. Later than that, it’s skipped.
Several tabs open: you get one notification, not one per tab.
Completed tasks don’t remind you. A repeating task reminds you for each occurrence.
Shared tasks: a reminder belongs to the task, so a reminder on a task in a shared life area, goal or project reaches everyone it’s shared with. See Share with others.
On or off per browser:Task reminder notifications and Habit reminder notifications in Settings → Notifications apply only to the browser or Mac app where you set them.
Heym doesn’t send reminders by email or text message. If a reminder didn’t appear, go through My reminders don’t show up.
An invitation when someone shares a life area, goal or project with an email address that has no Heym account yet. If you already have an account, the invitation appears in the sidebar under Shared instead. See Share with others.
A task someone assigned to you. Turn these off with Notification emails in Settings → Notifications.
Deleting your account: a code to confirm it, and messages when the deletion is scheduled, canceled or done. See Your account.
